Milkweed Tussock Moth or Milkweed Tiger Moth
Euchaetes egle

Observation date: September 17, 2014
Submitted by: mary blain
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Within the past week I have seen easily 25 of these caterpillars. They are about 1-1/4" long and they have been demolishing milkweed plants, eating all of the leaves and leaving the stem. I have not discovered any chrysalis' yet, however. I also have seen monarch caterpillars at the same time and one has made a chrysalis in the immediate area. Weather has been in 50s and 60s daytime, 40s and 50s at night.
