Why is there advertising on Butterflies and Moths of North America?
Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA) is an ambitious project that is labor-intensive, but limited funding only supports two part-time paid staff. As a result, the project has survived only through a lot of hard work and dedication from unpaid staff and volunteers.
In order to make this a more valuable resource, we want to modernize the mapping technology (including the expansion of maps to display Canadian data), to offer identification tools, and to improve access to detailed data in the BAMONA database. Many users have expressed their wishes to us over the years, and we have been working behind the scenes on these new features as funding permits.
Without additional financial support, however, these desired improvements will not happen in a timely fashion. Therefore, while we continue to seek funding from traditional sources, web advertising offers an additional revenue stream that could speed up development of new web site features for our loyal users.
